Thanos Ntounis, DDS, MS
I was born in Athens, Greece and grew up in a happy family of four. Before my 18th birthday, I was admitted to the School of Dentistry at the University of Athens following a rigorous national examination process. I received my dental degree (DDS) in 2005 and went on to complete a prosthodontics residency and a master’s degree from the same institution. Between 2005-2006, I had the privilege of serving as a Vice President of the European Dental Students Association. (http://www.edsaweb.org/exco)
In 2010, I began my periodontics and implants residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and the Birmingham Veterans Affairs Hospital. After being awarded a fellowship from the UAB Graduate School, I completed a second master’s degree in clinical dentistry. During my residency in Alabama, I met my wife, Dr. Lillie Pitman, during a periodontal surgery. Needless to say, I decided to stay in the United States!
At the University of Alabama Birmingham, I received extensive training in periodontal therapy, advanced bone grafting (for example, sinus lifts and ridge augmentation), dental implants, and IV and oral sedation. My prosthodontics background enables me to offer same-day implants and restorations for extensive as well as isolated areas. I enjoy replacing missing teeth in the front of the mouth and am proud of a long series of successful, highly aesthetic cases I have performed involving implants.
After completing my periodontics residency in Birmingham, I achieved board certification in periodontology and served as an assistant professor in the Dental School at the University of Louisville, Kentucky. During my time in academia, I was humbled to receive the prestigious Educator Award from the American Academy of Periodontology, as well as the “Favorite Faculty Award” given by the dental students.
My scholarly activity has allowed me to perform state-of-the-art clinical research, and publish more than a dozen peer-reviewed papers in the field of implant dentistry (https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=LHpvO_oAAAAJ&hl=en&oi=ao). It also gives me the opportunity to travel and lecture nationally and internationally. These experiences help me appreciate the complete spectrum of modern dental care and allow me to be part of an international network of excellent clinicians and opinion leaders.
My unique dual training in prosthodontics and periodontics enables me to treat complex dental cases by developing comprehensive treatment plans that address my patients’ unique needs, and are based on the most current evidence.
I strive to serve my patients and care for each person as if he or she were a member of my own family. In addition, I aim to serve as a resource for Virginia and the greater dental community. Dr. Pitman and I are directors of the Commonwealth Study Club, which is a local continuing education forum in the Seattle Study Club network. We are strong believers in community involvement and investment, and strive to continue to foster the culture of service and patient-centered care established by Dr. Bob McGrail. I am also a proud member of the Fredericksburg Rotary Club.
In my personal time, you can find me spending time with Lillie and our lab mix rescue, Sophie. I take special interest in landscape photography, hiking, art and history!
